About Us
Advancing Access to Objective Vestibular Care
DZ Balance Innovations is a digital health technology company dedicated to transforming how vestibular (balance) disorders are assessed, monitored, and managed. Our work centers on making clinically meaningful, objective vestibular diagnostics accessible beyond specialized laboratories—extending into everyday clinical care, telehealth environments, and patients’ homes.
By combining clinical science, mobile sensing technology, and thoughtful software design, we are building practical tools that support earlier diagnosis, personalized rehabilitation, and continuous monitoring across the full spectrum of vestibular care.
Our story
DZ Balance Innovations began with a simple but powerful question:
Could objective vestibular testing be delivered using only a smartphone?
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Dr. Adam Thompson‑Harvey — then an ENT surgery trainee — approached his longtime mentor, Dr. Joel Goebel, an internationally recognized leader in neurotology and vestibular science, with the idea of creating a smartphone-based diagnostic assessment for vestibular dysfunction.
Drawing from their prior research in vestibular disorders and clinical testing, they identified the Gaze Stabilization Test (GST), a clinically validated, in-office assessment of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) function originally developed by Dr. Goebel, as a promising foundation for demonstrating that meaningful diagnostic measurements could be captured using only smartphone sensors.
The vision expanded further after collaboration with Dr. Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, a globally recognized expert in mobile health engineering. Together, the team advanced prototype development, secured early support, and ultimately received critical funding through a National Institutes of Health STTR award.
This work led to the formation of DZ Balance Innovations LLC, the completion of a Phase I human clinical trial, and the development of a minimum viable product now progressing toward regulatory clearance.
What Drives Us
Expanding Access to Care
Millions of individuals experience dizziness, imbalance, and fall risk, yet objective vestibular testing remains difficult to access due to cost, equipment requirements, and clinical constraints. We believe accurate assessment should be available wherever care happens—not only in specialized labs.
Supporting Clinicians with Meaningful Data
Healthcare providers need reliable, quantitative insight to guide diagnosis, rehabilitation, and long-term management. Our technology is designed to integrate into real clinical workflows while extending visibility between visits.
Enabling the Future of Remote Healthcare
As telehealth and home-based monitoring become essential components of modern medicine, scalable diagnostic tools are critical. Our platform is built to support this shift responsibly, securely, and clinically.
Our Approach
DZ Balance Innovations brings together:
Clinical expertise in neurotology and vestibular science
Advanced mobile health engineering and computer vision
Evidence-driven software design for real-world healthcare use
The result is a smartphone-based system capable of delivering objective vestibular assessment across clinical, telehealth, and home settings—without the traditional barriers of specialized hardware.
Our goal is not to replace established diagnostic standards, but to extend their reach, improve monitoring, and help clinicians deliver more informed, personalized care.
Looking Ahead
We are advancing toward regulatory clearance and broader clinical deployment while continuing to strengthen clinical validation, partnerships, and real-world integration.
Our long-term vision is clear:
To make objective vestibular assessment accessible, scalable, and seamlessly integrated into modern healthcare.
